Posted on November 29th 2019Meet the Trainee – Rohan Sidhu
What were you doing before you joined the firm?
I secured my Training Contract whilst studying on my Legal Practice Course at De Montfort University, Leicester. I completed my LLB law degree at the same university where I graduated with First Class Honours. Having worked previously as a Paralegal prior to commencing my training contract, I was excited to further build on my legal knowledge and skillset.
What attracted you to the legal profession?
Law touches upon every aspect of life in society and its impact is ever evolving. The opportunity to make a positive change to our communities, coupled with the rewarding nature of the profession are the reasons as to why I wanted to enter into the legal profession. The fact that the law affects every single person, really fascinated me and I wanted to pursue a career which would be both challenging and intellectually stimulating.
Why Wall James Chappell?
Wall James Chappell has an excellent reputation both locally and nationally and I felt as though this firm were best placed to provide me with the best training possible. There is a great balance of high-quality work and extremely talented lawyers who are very approachable and always happy to offer advice. Wall James Chappell is a friendly firm I am now thoroughly enjoying being in such a supportive and collaborative working environment.
What areas of law have you worked in so far?
My first seat was in Commercial Property, a challenging seat but equally very rewarding and one that I took a great deal of valuable experiences from. My second seat was in the Private Client department which was a different type of work and one that I enjoyed immensely. My third seat was in residential property where I was able to manage and control my own files which was a great learning experience. I am now in my fourth seat in the Matrimonial department which I am finding incredibly interesting as I am exposed to a wide variety of work.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Balancing your workload and always striving to achieve the highest possible standard. As a trainee you are often working with different partners and fee earners on a number of matters. You have to learn how to prioritise tasks and communicate with people so that they are aware of how busy you are on a given day.
What is your favourite thing about working at Wall James Chappell?
The high quality of work, the opportunity to learn complex legal matters and the people at Wall James Chappell. The welcoming nature of the firm definitely makes you feel as if you’re part of a team. The wide variety of initiatives from social and networking events to charity events makes you feel as though you are part of a real community and not just a law firm.
What’s a typical day like as a Trainee Solicitor?
As a Trainee Solicitor, you are firmly embedded in team Wall James Chappell. You rotate between different departments over your two-year traineeship, so your tasks vary greatly. I can be doing anything from drafting and reviewing various legal documents to carrying out legal research and liaising with clients and other lawyers or third parties to progress matters. The high level of responsibility that I have been trusted with has been a great testament to the training provided by the firm.
